BA 9200 Assignments

Note: Please turn in a hard copy of the assignment at the beginning of class.

Assignment 1:

1.     Write 2 cognitive MI level objectives for any course of your choice. Write a few lines on how you would approach teaching a class to achieve one (or both) of those objectives.

Assignment 2:

1.     Draw a concept map for the course you are currently teaching (or are likely to teach in the near future, if you are not currently teaching.)

2.     Within the course, make an outline for one lecture.

Assignment 3:

1.     Write 2 multiple choice and 2 short answer test questions for the course you are teaching (or will teach). These should be at least at the Meaningful-Integrated level of learning.

Assignment 4: This is a longer assignment, and you can take up to a month to do this – due at the end of October.

1.     Write a short proposal for a new course (either at graduate or undergraduate level) that you wish to introduce into your program. Write a rationale for the course, along with a list of topics and tentative schedule. You can redo an existing course if you wish, again outlining the rationale for the changes.

Example of typical instructions for writing proposals.

In general, the proposal should include the following:

a)     Administrative details – Course number, name, and catalog description, number of credits, graduate or undergraduate, whether new or modification, person teaching, number of offerings a year.

b)    Rationale - How does it fit with existing courses in the department or college, possible overlap with other courses, who is the target population, expected enrolment.

c)     A syllabus that includes at the very least some global objectives (preferably specific topic objectives also), text (if any), and a concept map.

2.     Write a one-page philosophy of teaching. Look online at the website for the Center for Teaching and Learning at Georgia State University for examples. Search online for “Teaching Philosophy” to find other examples. Many universities will ask you for one as part of the hiring process. It should clearly articulate your ideas of what University teaching should be like – what you think students should learn, and how you plan to enable that in your classroom.

3.     Create a short video (roughly 5 minutes long) to introduce a particular topic, or to teach something very specific. Post it on Youtube (you can make it unlisted, so only those with a link can see it) and include a link in the assignment.
